Is The 9-5 Job Going on its Way Out and Gig Economy is Here to Stay?

The traditional 9-to-5 job has taken a beating in recent years as more and more people work from home as independent workers. With the proliferation of digital platforms, people have multiple channels to offer services and find fresh work opportunities with non-traditional work arrangements in common, even as automation changes how a traditional workplace works.

So, is the 9-to-5 job dead? Well, it’s still not the dinosaur, but today, with so many options to explore, it’s just not the only way to work. Let’s explore the gig economy and how it can help trump the traditional way of working.

Flexibility Increases Productivity

Flexibility at work is not just an add-on benefits package, but it brings about a positive aspect of workplace culture. It is an essential part of taking care of your employees and companies. Think about a time in your life when you have stuck to a rigid, predictable work schedule, whether or not by making decisions of your own. Next, you zero in the time when you worked for more hours than you wanted to cater to a supervisor’s expectations for your role.

Were you really happy with that kind of job? Also, how good were you as an employee back then?  And be honest, how well did you do at your job? Did you enjoy showing up every day, or did you dread the fact that you have to go to work? The gig economy helps you stop burnout and realize that working too much may not be right for you.

But how you work will give you happiness and contentment. There is scientific evidence that the more hours you put in, the less productive you are much likely to be. The opposite is true. And the happier you are, you can do your best work. This way you can do many other things too, such as pursue hobbies, invest in relationships and even something as basic as getting a good night’s sleep.

Promises More Focus

Another argument against 9 to 5 jobs is the constraints of a traditional day job schedule. It can keep people away from focusing on the work that lies before them. When you are working under the pressure of a deadline, you may realize that your most productive workdays may not necessarily have to be your longest ones.

You may start losing momentum or focus when you are stuck on the computer for far too long. And your interest in the task may even start to dwindle a little. There is a logic behind this when you have less time to complete a task. You may be better at heightening your productivity and increasing your focus. A shorter schedule will also help you finish your high-priority tasks and projects sooner. A flexible way of working is beneficial for both employees and employers.

Freeform Scheduling

The industrial age devoted downtime on weekends to spend with family and interests outside of work. Well, the future way of working will be completely different. The whole day will go toward doing different types of work. Freeform scheduling will be the new norm. Flexible working schedules permitted workers to experiment with the traditional 9-5 kind of working schedule. Organizations have become more result-oriented. Today they focus on the quality of the work rather than when or at what time the employees complete work.

Job Hopping Is the Go-to Norm

The notion of one job for life has changed completely. In the post-pandemic world, employers may try to hire workers on a contract or freelance basis, positions that may require a person from hopping from one job to another.  So, you may need soft skills, transferable skills, and other important qualifications that will better transform the workplace where 9-to-5 jobs are no longer in vogue.

Job seekers who have skills apart from the internet and technology may get to work beyond the confines of 9-to-5 jobs. If you have a good skill-set, you can switch to a different type of job more easily and comfortably. So, if you think you do not like the 9-5 jobs, you can certainly think of being the gig worker. It’s the new way of leading your life, and it is here to stay. What are your thoughts about the gig economy? Let us know in the comments section!
