Norway`s operational defense forces comprise mainly the Army, Navy, Air Force, Home Guard, and Special Operations Command. The total number of employees as of 2018 is around 15,873. Apart from that Norway has around 7000 conscripts serving.

The armed forces are subordinate to the Ministry of Defence, which is led by Anne-Grete Strøm-Erichsen. The formal commander-in-chief of the military enterprise of King Harald V, however, the Chief of Defence Harald Sunde happens to be the de facto commander-in-chief. The Chief of Defence leads the armed forces and is the key military adviser to the Minister of Defence. Military branches include Norwegian Army, Royal Norwegian Navy, Royal Norwegian Air Force, Home Guard, and Norwegian Cyber Force
